The best Dutch cyclists of the moment

The Netherlands may be a relatively small country, but we are big in cycling. Over the years there have been many Dutch heroes in cycling, who have put our country on the international map. Today's cyclists build on that. When you follow a cycling race on TV, it is good to keep an eye on the following names, because there is a good chance that they will perform well.

Tom Dumoulin

Tom Dumoulin is certainly one of the greatest Dutch cyclists of the moment. You don't have to know much about cycling to know his name. He has been riding as a professional since 2012, at the time under Argos-Shimano. Since then he has won stages in all Grand Tours and became world champion several times.

2015: Tour of Spain, the red leader's jersey for six days in a row. Didn't win the round, but it was his breakthrough.
2017: Winner of the Giro d'Italia
Also 2017: Winner World Cycling Championships Bergen
2018: Second in the Tour de France after several stage wins

In 2019, the cyclist was injured during the Giro d'Italia and had to retire for the season. He was also unable to participate in 2020 (when he would start at Jumbo-Visma) due to an intestinal problem. This was followed by the Covid-19 pandemic, which brought cycling to a complete standstill. To top it all off, he broke his wrist in 2021, which also brought this season to a standstill. But we expect him to come back completely in 2022, he himself focuses on the Giro d'Italia.

Mathieu van der Poel

Right from his debut, Mathieu van der Poel has left a deep impression. When he was twenty in 2015, he took part in the World Cycling Championships for the first time, and immediately became world champion there. So a very strong start, and it didn't stop there.

With all these achievements, Mathieu van der Poel has taken on a tough competitor, namely Wout van Aert. An excellent cyclist from Belgium. Although there is a lot of friendly rivalry between the two, Van der Poel is currently 4-3 ahead of victories.

Taco van der Hoorn

Van der Hoorn grew up as a football fanatic, after which he discovered cycling. Although the focus was still on football for a long time, he eventually had to make the choice to definitively focus on cycling due to an injury. It has done him no harm. Since he started driving professionally at Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij in 2017, he has been able to tap the following winnings.

Van der Hoorn has been a member of the Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux team since 2022. So he will try to get the best out of himself again this season, and we can expect a lot from him.

Bauke Mollema

Bauke Mollema is a name that you have most likely heard more than once before. He has been cycling professionally since 2008 and the victories he has achieved since then cannot be counted on two hands. It is therefore one of the most successful Dutch cyclists. We will therefore not number all acquisitions, but there are certainly a few honorable mentions .

2010: In the Giro d'Italia he finished 12th, but later that same year he won the Tour of Poland, finishing third in the standings.
2011: Vuelta a España: Points classification
2013: Tour of Switzerland, the second stage.
2016: The Clásica San Sebastian
2017: Tour de France, the fifteenth stage
2019: The Tour of Lombardy
2021: Tour de France, the fourteenth stage

Mollema has therefore had many successes, but has not always been able to give everything for a number of seasons. He has experienced a number of accidents and injuries, and even contracted mononucleosis once. Fortunately, it didn't keep him from cycling. So we expect to be able to enjoy watching his driving for even longer.

These are of course not the only good cyclists at the moment, there are many more promising athletes who we expect to be able to put at the top in the future.
